It has been my greatest pleasure to have coached Girls on the Run over the last 7 seasons at Rodgers. I had no idea when I showed up for the very first Girls on the Run meeting how much you would teach me, getting to know each and every one of you has changed and shaped my life in the most wonderful ways.
I am so very PROUD OF YOU! Never forget the lessons we have learned together. Keep your stars shining and surround yourself with others that have bright stars. Never settle and always try to be the very best version of yourself. Never stop following your passion.

Lesson 20
In Lesson 20, we plan our GOTR Community Impact Project. We talk about all the skills they have learned so far that will help them with the project. As a group, we will chose a cause/group to run for. Each of the girls will try to reach their lap goal in support of the cause/group. Next time, we will wear our Girls on the Run t-shirts for our Community Impact Project! Questions and Conversation Starters: 1. Do you need to bring or prepare anything to carry out your role in the Community Impact Project? 2. Can you think of anything we could do together to positively impact our community? Lesson 21 This week, we will finish our Community Impact Project and review what they have learned during Girls on the Run. During Lesson 21, we help make a difference in our community with our project! Ask her to tell you how it went. Questions and Conversation Starters: 1. Did you enjoy your Community Impact Project? 2. How did it feel to do something to help another person or group of people? 3. I am so proud of you for giving back this way! What have you learned about yourself while doing this project? Lesson 23 In Lesson 23, we play a game to show what Girls on the Run means to each of us. We will also play a running game that lets the girls practice using all the skills they have learned this season. As the girls enjoy running, talking, laughing, and just being with friends, the coaches will run along with each of them to say our personal farewells. Questions and Conversation Starters: 1. How do you feel now that Girls on the Run is almost over? 2. Do you feel like you are ready for the 5k? (If you are running the 5k together, share how you are feeling as well) Our Final Celebration is May 21st from 3:24 - 5:00 PM
The girls are welcome to bring a treat to share with their teammates (we do have a nut allergy). The girls will spend our last practice writing thank you notes, eating snacks, getting their awards and signing t-shirts! Parents are welcome to join us! Our 5k is Sunday, May 20th at Lake St. Clair Metro Park
Our race start time is 1:00 pm rain or shine! Please arrive no later than ONE HOUR prior to the start of the race. Check in with the coaches in our zone 6 to get your race number. We will warm up and use the restroom prior to the race and then line up together. You can also visit the happy hair station and tutu making station before the start of the race. Lesson 18
In Lesson 18, we talk about the messages that the media can send to girls. They learn how to become more aware of negative images/messages from the media and think about what they mean. We also talk about ways we can get people to stop creating songs and advertisements with unhealthy messages. The girls learn that negative messages from the media or our peers are hard to forget, so it is important we focus on the positive messages we learn in GOTR! Questions and Conversation Starters: 1. How do the images we see and the words we hear relate to how we feel about ourselves? 2. How can we try to stop people from creating songs and advertisements with unhealthy messages? Lesson 19 In Lesson 19, the girls learn about the roles they can play in the community. We will play running games that show them they each have special gifts and the talents that they can contribute to every group. They are beautiful girls who can make an amazing impact in this world! Questions and Conversation Starters: 1. What role do you play in the community? 2. Let’s each share an issue that we care deeply about with one another. (i.e. environment, animals, equality, peace) The girls have picked Operation Beautiful as their Community Impact Project this season.
The mission of Operation Beautiful is to post anonymous notes in public places for other people to find. The point is that WE ARE ALL BEAUTIFUL. You are enough... just the way you are! You can find more information at: www.operationbeautiful.com Each of the girls should bring a pack of post it notes and a pen to practice on Monday May 14th if you would like to send extras for the girls that may forget you are welcome to. The girls will share some of their notes around the school during practice, the remaining notes should be spread around the community when they are visiting places with their families. Bathroom mirrors are wonderful spots to leave an encouraging note when you are at dance class or the mall. Leave a note inside your check at dinner or inside the cover of a library book. They will be instructed to leave their notes in a safe and appropriate way. If you have any questions please contact Coach Jamie Lesson 15
In Lesson 15, the girls learn the different roles in bullying: the bully, the target, or a bystander. We play a game that shows us that the only way a bystander can help put an end to bullying is when she is a “Stand-Byer!” A Stand-Byer reports bullying to an adult and supports girls who are being bullied. Questions and Conversation Starters: 1. What is bullying? 2. How can you be a Stand-Byer instead of a bystander? Lesson 16 In Lesson 16, the girls learn to choose friends who help show our star power! We play a running Scavenger Hunt that helps them find teammates who are good listeners, respectful, kind, and more. We also practice choosing friends that encourage us during our workout. Next time we will have our practice 5k. Help your Girl on the Run make a list of everything she has learned that will help her run a 5k—things that will help her physical body and things that will help her thoughts and emotions! Questions and Conversation Starters: 1. How can we choose friends that encourage us? 2. Let’s each say the name of one of our best friends and share why we choose to be friends with them. Our Practice 5k is on May 7th! A few things to know about the Practice 5k:
-We will begin running our laps at the start of practice after a quick warm up. -Parents are WELCOME and encouraged to join in! Run a lap, run all the laps or just come cheer on the girls. It's a big day for them and your support is always appreciated! -Please make sure the girls are dressed appropriately I have seen a LOT of jeans worn during practice this season which are not recommended for running in - friction can cause burns and raw skin from the denim. Running shoes and water should also be at every practice. The goal for the girls at the practice 5k just like the actual 5k is only to FINISH and not how long it takes. Sometimes girls need a bit longer than the allotted practice time to complete their laps, Coach Jamie will stay as long as necessary for all of the girls to complete their laps. Please plan ahead if you know your girl may take a bit longer - generally most of the girls are finished just before or shortly after 5pm but I have stayed in seasons past until as late as 6pm. If you are at the practice 5k you are welcome to take your girl home after they have completed their laps even if it's before 5pm but I do encourage them to cheer on their teammates for a few minutes first. Make sure to check out with one of the Coaches prior to leaving. At 5pm we will release the girls that have completed their 5k laps to the parents waiting in the parking lot. I will update anyone that is waiting for a girl that is still completing their remaining laps and try to give an estimate of how much longer they will be. As always if you have any questions please contact Coach Jamie Lesson 13
In Lesson 13, the girls learn how important it is to express our feelings, wants, and needs in a healthy way. We practice sharing our feelings and standing up for ourselves by using 4 phrases: “I feel…, When you…, Because…, and I would like for you to….” It takes a lot of courage to stand up for ourselves and others, so help your girl practice! Questions and Conversation Starters: 1. Can you think of a time when you chose to stand up for yourself? 2. What are the 4 key phrases to use when you want to stand up for yourself? Let’s practice them together. Lesson 14 In Lesson 14, the girls learn that gossip hurts everyone. We talk about some different questions that can help us figure out if someone is gossiping. We also practice using our STOP and take a BrThRR strategy to respond to different gossip situations. As always, we include the power of running (and/or walking, skipping, hopping, or dancing)! Next time, we will talk about bullying. Stay tuned! Questions and Conversation Starters: 1. What is gossip? 2. How can you stop rumors from spreading? Lesson 10
In Lesson 10, the girls learn what cooperation means. They are able to practice cooperating with each other by listening, sharing ideas, and following others’ lead. The team works together to come up with a goal to work on until next time. While it would be great if everyone could always work together and cooperate with each other, sometimes the girls feel pressured by others instead. Questions and Conversation Starters: 1. What is cooperation? 2. How do you and I cooperate every day? Lesson 11 In Lesson 11, the girls practice how to stand up to peer pressure with a game that helps them learn to STOP and take a BrThRR (breather) when they feel pressured. This strategy teaches them to STOP, BREATHE, THINK, RESPOND, & REVIEW which helps them step back and figure out how they feel instead of making a decision too quickly. Questions and Conversation Starters: 1. What is peer pressure? 2. Do you remember the STOP and take a BrThRR strategy? Will you tell me about it? Lesson 12 In Lesson 12, the girls will have a chance to have fun playing together! They cooperate to make decisions as a team. They pick the games we will play and even lead the activities themselves. Our team will work together to decide on a Community Impact Project for the end of the season. Help your Girl on the Run with this week’s goal by figuring out one way she can help with the Community Impact Project! Questions and Conversation Starters: 1. How did you and your team cooperate when you picked games to play? 2. What will your team do for the Community Impact Project? How will you help out? |
