Lesson 18 The theme for Lesson 18 was gratitude. The concept of gratitude is one from which people of all ages can benefit. In today’s lesson, the girls were introduced to the idea that being grateful for our circumstances, whatever they may be, is a choice. In the opening activity, they took turns being both grateful and ungrateful for different circumstances and learned that being grateful provides a positive perspective or outlook on a situation and activates their Star Power. In the warm-up, the girls created an “Alphabet of Thanks” by listing one thing they are grateful for next to each letter of the alphabet. The workout had the girls run silently to take time to reflect on all they have to be grateful for. Each lap was assigned a specific topic for the girls to think about, including: people/animals, places, actions of others, and events. Today’s GOTR GOAL was to share with someone what they are grateful for in their life. Questions and Conversation Starters:
Lesson 19 In Lesson 19 the theme was using our Star Power. Today the girls used their strengths and Girls on the Run skills to complete their Community Impact Project. The GOTR GOAL for today’s lesson was to try to find other ways they can give back to the communities to which they belong. Questions and Conversation Starters:

Lesson 17
In Lesson 17 the theme was strengths. In today’s lesson, the girls learned that they all have strengths and that these strengths help make our group even better. The girls got right into their workout today and completed an activity sheet that gave them an opportunity to reflect on and highlight their strengths. At the end of each lap, they circled a strength they feel they possess, such as: math, following directions, and using my hands. In the second half of the lesson, the girls identified how they can use their strengths to contribute to the implementation of the Community Impact Project and finalized how the project will be structured. The GOTR GOAL for today’s lesson was to pay attention to how and when they use their strengths. Questions and Conversation Starters:
We are SO INCREDIBLY PROUD of all of the girls for completing the 5k! Great job!
Coach Jamie Coach Raena Coach Angela Hi Parents/Guardians ,
I incorrectly told a few of you that our final lesson was on December 7th which is a half day. Our final lesson and celebration will be December 5th. See everyone Sunday at the 5k! Coach Jamie Lesson 15
In Lesson 15 the theme was that you are stronger than you think. Today the girls built their confidence for the end-of-the-season 5k by completing a practice 5k (3.1 miles) with their teammates. There were lots of smiles and high-fives as the girls cheered each other on! The GOTR GOAL for today’s lesson was to set a specific goal for the end-of-the-season 5k. Questions and Conversation Starters:
Lesson 16 The theme for Lesson 16 was compromise. Today’s lesson had two goals: to teach the girls about compromise and to allow the girls time to brainstorm and decide upon their Community Impact Project. The opening activity, a game of group Rock, Paper, Scissors, had the girls work towards a common goal of all showing the same symbol. Getting all of the teams to do this required patience, communication, and compromise—all skills they have been building throughout the season. Today’s workout built upon Lesson 14 as the girls reflected on how they can help the communities they listed during that lesson’s workout. At the end of the lesson, the girls decided as a group which one community they will focus their attention on for their Community Impact Project and decided how to help them. This process, just like the activity at the beginning of the lesson, required good communication and compromise. Today’s GOTR GOAL was to practice their compromising skills when working with others. The girls should have given you this paper, but just in case here is the 5k information for Sunday (Runday!)
We are VERY excited about the 5k! The 5k is located at: Belle Isle on Sunday, November 19th. It begins at:10:00 AM I need to arrive by: 9:30 AM so that I can check in, warm up with my team, use the restroom and enjoy the pre-race activities. It will be COLD with a high of 35 degrees that day. Please dress in layers with your girls on the run/heart & sole t-shirt on the top layer. The girls already have their shirts (except Ava who will be getting hers tomorrow). We are meeting our coaches in Zone: 6 it is very important that I check in with my coaches when I arrive so I can get my race number. Girls without a registered adult running buddy will be paired up with a coach or another registered adult to run the 5k. You can register for the 5k at: http://www.gotrdetroit.org/gotr-5k/ You will be directed to park in the large lot by the casino building. The casino building will be open and will have the pre-race activities located inside. Please check in with coaches before enjoying the activities. *If you are running late or have any other problems arriving to the 5k or locating our zone please call or text Coach Jamie ASAP. If you are NOT going to the 5k PLEASE let Coach Jamie know. Coach Jamie: 586-489-9637 ***Parking Pass: Belle Isle is a state park and requires a State Recreation Permit to enter. If you park your car without a permit you may receive what appears to be a ticket on your car. It is NOT a ticket; it is a notice. You will be able to pay the notice at the guard booth at the event or mail within 10 days. Any questions can be directed to the DNR. If you purchased a permit in the runner registration, you should have found it attached to your bib/t-shirt. If you receive a notice and do not pay within 10 days you could receive a court fine (ticket) of up to $250 from the 36th District Court. I need to bring: Water, A snack, running shoes and a positive attitude! See you at the 5k! Lesson 14
The theme for Lesson 14 was helping others. In today’s lesson, the girls participated in several activities, such as Perpetual Tag, where their help is essential to the team’s success. Before the workout, the girls defined community, and while they ran their laps they thought about and wrote down all of the communities to which they belong, such as school, Girls on the Run, dance class, basketball team, etc. This lesson was the first of four that prepares the girls for the Community Impact Project, which they will complete in Lesson 19. Today’s GOTR GOAL was to make a contribution to one of the communities to which they belong. Questions and Conversation Starters:
Just a reminder that we do not have practice on Tuesday November 7th.
Also our practice 5k is on November 14th! Parents are welcome to run with the girls or just cheer them on! Please know that some girls take longer to complete the laps than others and may not be finished by 5pm, I will stay until ALL of the girls have finished. A note will be coming home soon about the 5k. Please watch for it! The girls will be planning their community impact project in the next two weeks - be on the lookout for what they will need to bring to complete our project. More to come on the community impact project! Please contact me if you have any questions or concerns. Coach Jamie Parents and Guardians if your girl is going to be absent from Girls on the Run please let me know, you can email or text me. Please be aware of excess absences, our lessons build upon the previous lessons and spending time catching up girls who have been absent takes away from that day's fun.
Lesson 13 In Lesson 13 the theme was cooperation. Today was the first of four lessons on teamwork. In today’s lesson, the girls focused on cooperation and how it impacts the group by engaging in activities that reinforce the importance of this concept. In the Getting On Board, the girls played “Centipede Circle,” an activity where they had to work together to move in a circle. In the warm-up, the girls did a ladder run, where the group had to cooperate to complete a lap as a team. Today’s workout had the girls completing their second interval session by running in groups of three and setting a team lap goal. Setting a team lap goal, rather than an individual lap goal, allowed the girls to apply their cooperation skills to a specific task and use the communication skills they learned in the previous lessons. The GOTR GOAL for today’s lesson was to cooperate with classmates, teammates, friends, and/or family when they can. Questions and Conversation Starters:
